The Journey Continues!

April 3, 2014

Here I am once again, on this journey to "Health and Well being". The struggle is real! I am a man of 48 years and I am finding it a bit of a struggle to stay focused and on the right track to becoming a healthier and well older gentleman. I'm also finding that, a lot of the people in my life aren't much help. I'm not saying that it's their fault; I’m just saying that I’m not getting much support.

One thing that I hear a lot is “Men don’t have to be worried about their weight like women do”, or “I think that a belly looks good on a man”. To that I say “Bullpuckey”! I am just as concerned about my weight and appearance just as much as women are. I’m not sure why there is a misconception that, when we as men reach a certain age we’re not concerned about our weight or appearance. Not only should we be concerned about the way we look; we should also be concerned about our weight for health reasons.

I think that I have come to a point in my life where my weight is really starting to be a real big problem (no pun intended).  On top of that, I am really uncomfortable with my weight. Right now, I weigh about 250lbs, give or take (more give then take, lol) and for my age and height I should be at least 200lbs to feel comfortable. For the majority of my life I weighed like 180-190lbs and now in my older years, this extra weight is hard to carry.

As a man of color there are several risks to my health that I need to be concerned with. Some of these include

  • High Blood Pressure (HBP)
  • Diabetes
  • Gout

And a host of other diseases that escape me right now, but all of which are a huge concern to me.

One thing is for certain; I am very motivated. And dare I say, obligated to get myself to a better state of  “Health and Wellness”. I’m not here to tell anyone how to do it, I’m here so that the understanding is that, we all struggle with one thing or another and weight and weight is one of the biggest.

So my job is to take this Journey as a life-changing event and hopefully, others will be able to relate and understand that if you are struggling to get yourself Healthier and Well, you are not alone. Hopefully I can help someone out there and someone out there can help me, but whatever the case, I WILL get this done because I want to live a long and productive life.

 Come with Me…

 Peace with Love!!!

The Journey

March 17, 2014

HELLO WORLD (again)!

It feels like it has been a long, long time since I've written a blog/article; here on "Street Articles" or any place else. So this out pouring of "verbiage" is just a bit of getting back in to the swing, trying to pick up where I left off and, hopefully, writing some interesting and pertinent content that all of us can gain from.

So, "The Journey"! This is something that I find myself wanting to call my “Quest” for a "Healthier Lifestyle", or way of living. So for that reason, I feel like I have to share my “Quest” and share the lessons that I learn along the way.

Hopefully, in the coming weeks, months, years, I will be able to share things that I have researched and used or still use products that will aid me on this journey to a “Healthy State of Well Being”.

Now, when I say “products”, I mean things that are holistic and natural, because the last thing I want to do is put a bunch of unhealthy chemicals in my body; I’ve been doing that all of my life; up to this point. I believe that one of the mistakes that we all make is settle for a diagnosis and chemical prescription that our doctor tells us we need. I have noticed my parents and grand parents constantly take drugs that mean them no good, but they take it because “My doctor says I need it to feel better”.

The approach I plan to use for my journey will be open to more natural ways of Health and Wellness. I believe that mankind got along just fine for ages just using “natural medicines” , things that were found in nature. A lot of those things are still found in nature today.

My goal is to find and try as many natural and homeopathic ways to a healthier me as I possibly can. I do believe that with the right focus, drive, motivation and faith, all things are possible. Being able to stay focused and motivated will be for me, but I have wanted this for myself for so long, I have faith that I can accomplish my goal.

There is so much benefit living healthy and well. How do I know? I see it around me all day, from Facebook friends to television to magazines. And I think, deep inside, my body is calling for a more healthy balance.

Btw, there is this doctor that I've just stumbled across and her name is Dr. Carolyn Dean. I've actually tried the sample portion of her program and I must say that I'm considering going a little further.

So on that note, I’m off to get myself set up for success!!!

Peace & Love!!

I'M BACK

July 15, 2013
Hello out there in "Health and Wellness" land. I have been away for a while, but now I'm back to pick up where I left off.
The last time I was blogging, I had pretty much just started my website and a lot of my blogs where about headaches and remedies for them because I was suffering from "Cluster Headaches". I couldn't find a lot of info on clusters, so I went with it's cousin, the "Migraine".

This time around, with a new web site name and new focus, I'm going to aim towards more "Health and Wellness" because I believe if we lead more healthy and well lifestyles, these afflictions will be less prominent. I say this because, in the past few months, I have stopped smoking, started exercising and making a great effort to eat more healthy.

I hope that you will follow and join me me in a quest to live a more healthy and well lifestyle so that we can live more productive, long, healthy lives....

Natural Headache Remedies

February 1, 2012
Natural Headache Remedies vary from the different types of headaches and person to person. What works for me might not work for you, but what I am going to try to do with this blog is give natural remedies that can help and not harm.

Some people believe that massage works well for relieving headache pain, and for some people it really does, but for some people it causes more pain because massage releases toxins and those toxins are pushed up towards and to the brain and can cause terrible headaches that will last a couple of days. So if you choose to get a massage make sure that it is localized to just the head and that should alleviate the pain. But keep in mind that it depends on the type of headache as well.

Relaxation and Meditation is a great natural remedy also because sometimes the stresses of our busy lives can cause stress or tension headaches, and relaxing and or meditating allows us to settle down, and release that stress and tension.

Heat and Cold are ways to relieve headache pain as well. The alternate use of heat and cold soothes the nerves allowing them to relax and let the blood flow through to the pain. Ten minutes of each for about 30 minutes usually does the trick.

Acupuncture is known to help with headaches (especially migraines) also. Acupuncture is a ancient Chinese treatment for pain, and really helpful with a few visits to a certified acupuncturist.

There is another technique that I have used for my cluster headaches and that is water. I'm not sure how it works for  other headaches, but it does give some relief for clusters. Once I would feel a headaches coming on, I would drink about a liter or water and that calm the pain down, and sometimes get rid of the headache all together.

These are just a few remedies or techniques if you will to help with just about any headache that people suffer from. So if you are like me and you don't like taking a lot of prescription meds, some of these alternative methods might be just what's needed.

I hope this helps

Peace with Love!

Headaches and there Causes

December 22, 2011
There are a lot of different headaches out there, and probably a dozen causes for each one. It's really not that hard to tell the difference to which type a headache you might have because headaches affect us according to our life styles. Some headaches are caused by hunger. Now I'm not sure what kind to call it other than a hunger headache. You may also find that you are getting a headache when you are tense or stressed,

Migraine Triggers

December 9, 2011
Triggers for migraine headaches are varied and are different from person to person. A trigger for one migraine sufferer maybe not be a trigger for someone else. Also, for obvious reasons, chemically, there are some factors (menstrual period)  that will females and not males, which leads me to believe (not researched) why females suffer from migraines more than males.

Most triggers can be avoided if you know what things to avoid. Below I have tried to list most of the triggers to look out for if you suffer from migraine headaches:

Migraine trigger chart

The following Migraine Trigger Chart provides a helpful list of some common migraine triggers.

Common Potential Migraine Triggers
Lifestyle Food Physical Environmental
Emotional stress Chocolate Menstrual cycle or other hormonal changes Weather or seasonal changes
Depression Nuts, peanut butter   Travel through different time zones
Too little sleep, or changes in sleep Cheese, yogurt, sour cream   Odors or pollution
Exercise or overactivity Red wine or other alcoholic drinks   Bright light
Skipping meals/fasting Processed meats
  Monosodium glutamate (MSG)
  Coffee in excess

I don't suffer from migraine headaches myself, but I do suffer from "cluster headaches" which are closely related to migraines, so hopefully,  I am helping myself as well as someone else. I have provided a few links that I have researched and some of the products I have even used to help this condition.

I Hope this Helps!

The Migraine & Headache Solution!

The Migraine Headache

December 9, 2011
Migraine Headaches is a episodic disorder. These headaches affect about 12% more females than males, and affect about 23 million people over the age of 12. Not all the people who suffer from migraines seek medical attention, but those that do will usually consult their family physician and will be referred to a neurologist who specialize in headaches. Believe it or not, 70% to 80% have a family history of migraine headaches. Less than half of all migraine sufferers have received a diagnosis of migraine from their healthcare provider. Migraine is often misdiagnosed as sinus headache or tension-type headache.

There are quite a few factors that can trigger a migraine headache, for instance, if your sleep pattern changes, or you miss a meal, or maybe you are taking a medication that cause swelling of blood vessels. About one-fifth of the people that suffer from migraines experience aura which is a warning that is associated with a migraine just before the headache hits. You may start seeing dots or wavy line about an hour before the onset of a migraine. Some people will have tingling in their arm or face or difficulty speaking. Diagnosis of migraine headache is made by establishing the history of the migraine-related symptoms and other headache characteristics as well as a family history of similar headaches. By definition, the physical examination of a patient with migraine headache in between the attacks of migraine does not reveal any organic causes for the headaches. Tests such as the CT scan and MRI are useful to confirm the lack of organic causes for the headaches.

To date, there are no cure for migraine headaches, just medication, whether prescribed or alternative, and therapy in very extreme cases. In my quest to research migraine headaches, I have found some information and products for the treatment of migraines that could help in the fight against this very painful condition;
